In this month’s At The Flicks, the team discuss some of their favourite cult Movies. At least one of them is a choice you wouldn’t expect! Our cult movies cut a meandering path through time and genre, from 70’s disco, via 80’s French noir thrillers to end up at a 21st century animated Japanese bath house. We hope you enjoy the journey?
Our reviews this month are Avengers Infinity War, Deadpool 2 and Breaking In. This months Podcast is a superhero laden show, which upsets at least one of our presenters! Also included are our recommendations of what else is worth watching if you enjoyed the three Movies under our microscope.
As usual, our Movie news section takes a rather irreverent look at what you can expect to see in cinemas next year. This month’s News section includes a scoop, before we finish with another tough Movie question for you.
Graham’s review
Graham’s reviews the latest blockbuster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War
Synopsis: This is the first of a two part story about the powerful Thanos and his quest to collect the six Infinity Stones, which will make him the most powerful being in the universe. Earths mightiest heroes must put aside the difference exposed in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and band together to stop Thanos’ evil plan.
- Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo
- Written by: Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely
- Staring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman and Elizabeth Olsen. Plus many, many more!
Jeff’s review
Jeff reviews a Movie that takes a different approach to the ‘Woman in Peril’ trope, Breaking In.
Synopsis: This is not the movie Jeff had intended to review. Jeff’s Movie for May was supposed to be Entebbe (‘7 Days in Entebbe’ in the US). Unfortunately Entebbe was now shown at any cinema in Gloucestershire. So Jeff had to make a last minute change and picked ‘Breaking in’ as his Movie for May.
- Directed by: James McTeigue
- Written by: Ryan Engle
- Staring: Gabrielle Union, Billy Burke and Richard Cabral
Neil’s review
Neil reviews the ultra violent, expletive laden and hilarious, X-Men apprentice Wade Wilson in his new Movie, Deadpool 2 as he puts together his own “Super Duper Group” X-Force! Deadpool and his new team battle to save a young mutant who is being hunted by a super solider from the future!
- Directed by: David Leitch
- Written by: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Ryan Renolds
- Staring: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison and Zazie Beetz
Mentioned in the Podcast
Ridley Scott’s Work in Detail
During this months show, Graham mentioned a well researched, interesting and detailed blog post by Phil Foster, entitled Ridley Scott Retrospective. Click on that link to go directly to the retrospective. Other articles and reviews on Phil’s site can be found here.
Phil also publishes annually his own personal list of the best and worst Movies of the year. Always an interesting and thought provoking read. These annual articles and reviews and can be found here.
You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?”
(Travis Bickle, Taxi Driver 1976)
Also this month, you might have noticed that we introduced ourselves in Russian, Japanese and French. The reason for this strange behaviour is that every month we get listener statistics from SoundCloud who host our Podcast. Last month, we discovered we had listeners is the Russian Federation, Japan and France. Whilst 99% of our listeners are from the UK, US and Australia we were so amazed that we had picked up followers outside of the English speaking world, that we decided to say hello and goodbye in these languages. It is a running joke among the team, that we really need to brush up our language skills to meet the needs of the international podcasting market.

Hidden here at the bottom of the page, is the section where we correct mistakes made in the Podcast.
This month we stated that the The Six Billion Dollar Man would be arriving in cinemas some time in 2019. However, after recording the Podcast, we have since learned that because of the departure of the director and writer, the Movie has been put back to 2020, whilst Wahlberg and his team search for replacements. Has this left Mel Gibson with enough time to make his second ‘Passion’ project Resurrection? We’ll keep you posted and you can be sure our reluctant ‘Mel expert’, Graham will keep you up to date with any further developments in the coming months.
